Lion's Den Gorge

Goals, Benefits and Opportunities

Goals
To purchase, protect and preserve the Dhar Property / Lion's Den Gorge Natural Area and 0.7 miles of Lake Michigan bluff and shoreline

To establish an Ozaukee County park that provides recreational, educational and scientific opportunities, creates access to Lake Michigan, and preserves scenic vistas

Benefits

Preservation of Lake Michigan bluff lands, shoreline and Lion’s Den Gorge Natural Area for an aesthetically pleasing community

Provide the public with an area for passive recreation, nature education and scientific research, wildlife viewing, and scenic vistas… a place to gather thoughts

Additional 79-acre parcel directly adjacent to a 44-acre USFWS parcel further enhances populations of migratory birds and other wildlife

Protect Critical Species Habitat, geological features and unique ecology and preserve plant and animal diversity

Directly protect surface and groundwater quality

Property values increase on lands locatednext to protected natural areas and open spaces

Provide for “Smart Growth” land use

Opportunity

A large parcel of undeveloped land along the Lake Michigan shoreline is rare. Convenient public access to diverse wetland, woodland and open grassland communities adjacent to Lake Michigan is even more rare. Less tangible, but equally important, preserving this key section of Lake Michigan shoreline will contribute to the overall quality of life and maintain some unique native vegetative, wildlife, ecological and geological habitats for future generations.
